Seedcamp

leave a comment »

Seedcamp, is the European-wide competition for seed-stage startups,  each winners gets €50,000 seed funding from Seedcamp’s conglomerate of venture backers, but the stake in each startup varys, along similar lines to the Y-Combinator model. This year a record seven winners were named rather than the five  originally set out to award.

For a full write up check out Check out TechCrunch UK for a fuller write-up but the winners were:

BaseKit (UK)
This is a deceptively easy way to create complex web sites and applications, which saves time building simple apps and demos.

Kyko (UK) (no site yet)
Currently in stealth mode, but from what I’ve seen it’s pretty good for a 21-year old founder.

Mobclix (US)
A “comscore with an ad network for iPhones apps” said the judges. They were also a TechCrunch 50 company. They are considering moving to Europe where the mobile scene is hot right now.

Soup (Austria)
This is Tumblr for the rest of us. It has a Twitter-like interface enabling feed imports/ lifestreaming, bookmarklets, you name it.

Stupeflix (France)
This is similar to Animoto but where that site takes hours to convert video Stupeflix does it in real time on a massive scale.

Toksta (Germany)
This is white label IM and video for social networks, so socnets don’t have to create it themselves. This adds stickiness and increases user activity.

uberVU (Romania)
uberVU keeps track of context from all over the Web (responses, comments, trackbacks, diggs, etc.) around a story so you can see what people are saying about it on different sites and services. The founders say they are “mapping the conversational graph” – pretty cool stuff for three guys from Romania, not known for many startups.

Hive Logic Enkoder

leave a comment »

You guys may aready know about this, but it was news to me. The Hive Logic “Enkoder” is a really handy little utility that converts email addresses into encrypted Javascript code which hides them from bots and scrapers, but keeps them visible to humans. Run the enkoder to generated the javascript code and paste it into your sites. No more ugly name [at] email [dot] com addresses!

FFFFound

FFFFounnd is this awesome website my flatmate showed me yesterday while I was looking for something to wow the Portable Blog with.

It allows users to post and share their favorite images found on the web, but also dynamically recommends each user’s tastes and interests for an inspirational image-bookmarking experience!!

So User Today,Tomorrow posted this great image and when I click it, I get recommended with a selection of other similar images posted by other users. If I click on one of those the process continues.

Andy Gilmore

There is some cool stuff out there and FFFFound is a really easy way of exploring some of it.

Exit Reality

with 2 comments

One of the girls from Ish media was telling me about this last night. It’s particularly relevant to Courtney..

Its a browser plugin for IE, Firefox and Chrome that allows you to browse the web in 3D. Its been in development for 8 years by one guy, an Australian by the name of Danny Stefanic. It launched yesterday at Fed Square. I think that the most interesting thing about it is that when you are browsing a website in 3D you become a part of that space, and you can see and talk to anyone else who is there.  It turns browsing into a public experience, in the same way as visiting a physical space would be. Check out the video here.

The Other Inbox

with one comment

One of the concepts taken to Techcrunchs fourth session on Advertising and Commerce this week received a standing ovation.

Burt Copybox

The Other Inbox has been developed to help us manage the inbox overload issue. For example all the newsletters etc that we get can be managed and keep separate from everything else in the following way:

Users can sign up for OtherInbox (it’s free) and create vanity email addresses for different services. So if you want to receive product announcements from Amazon via email, set up an OtherInbox account called “amazon@yourname.otherinbox.com” and only emails from Amazon will be sent to that address. The same can be done for any place you input email addresses.

OtherInbox will soon offer features that can collect shipping notices, receipts, and bill payment reminders, and collect date information from each. Once collected, it will add those dates to Google Calendar, iCal, or any other calendar app.

Its still in private beta but will be out soon… Can’t wait.
