Things we find along the way…

CAPTCHA mobilised for scientific work

leave a comment »

A project called reCAPTCHA is taking words from old manuscripts that cannot be digitised by automated systems and turning these words into CAPTCHA’s so that humans (who are much better at this kind of recognition) can do the work.

So the idea is that, instead of wasting the time of scientists and students in doing this tedious recognition work, why not turn them into CAPTCHA’s so that the millions of people to log into websites every day can do the work instead.

And these images are actually much more secure and difficult to crack than traditional CAPTCHA methods which use mathematical algorithms to produce the distortions. Maybe we should think about using reCAPTCHA in our next site.
