Iran: requires photoshop lessons.

The New York Times blog reports on Iran’s sadly lacking Photoshop skills in light of a digital manipulation scandal that has both raised eyebrows in suspicion at the integrity and blind acceptance of major media platforms towards elements of their reporting, as well as the computery skills of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

As news spread across the world of Iran’s provocative missile tests in recent days, so did an image of four missiles heading skyward in unison. Unfortunately, it appeared to contain one too many missiles, a point that had not emerged before the photo was used on the front pages of The Los Angeles Times, The Financial Times, The Chicago Tribune and several other newspapers as well as on BBC News, MSNBC, Yahoo! News, NYTimes.com and many other major news Web sites.

The images were originally sourced from the website of Sepah News, the media wing of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and media platforms duped internationally are rushing to distance themselves from the placement.

In a culture of accessible digital manipulation tools and wall to wall cgi, the question remains on how easily major media sources can by duped by a few snips and tucks on Photoshop?

In response, Boing Boing has launched their own fan-remixed YOU SUCK AT PHOTOSHOP IRAN competition including the highly convincing Hello Kitty missile test below…
