Things we find along the way…

Mojo Rising

Reuters ‘Mobile Journalist Project’ is to equip reporters with Nokia N82 phones as a standardised journalistic tool, a formalisation of the rise of “Mobile Journalists,” or ‘Mojos’…

The Guardian reports that the phone is comes kitted out for reportage as standard with a wireless keyboard, miniature tripod, a solar battery and decent microphone, with software enabling organization and online publishing of content, or live streaming via qik.com.

Editor’s weblog states that: “New media proponent Jeff Jarvis claims that camera phones are not only a useful device for papers to get user-generated photos, but are in fact “the new tool of the journalist’s trade.”

Reuters has also recommended the low budget (US$110) Flip Video as a portable device aimed at the lower or localised end of reporting or community newspapers, which is capable of recording 30 minutes of video with simplified uploading capabilities.

The Guardian states that: “For today, a wired journalist without a camera and connectivity is like a hack without a pencil.”
