Things we find along the way…

An evening with Martin Hosking

So I saw Martin speak last night at a BSI function. It was one of more enjoyable presentations I have seen.

Martin has a background in companies through LookSmart and now in his venture Red Bubble. LookSmart was one of Australia’s most successful companies during the original dot com boom.

He talked about Rd Bubble. They raised $2.5 million in 2006 from Private Investment. The site had sales of $370K in the December quarter and is expected to turn over $1M in the year. It gets one million page views a day

It was an interesting discussion in valuing businesses, raising capital and the sources of this. He said VC is not concerned about failure, most ventures do, but missing out on the next big one – Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. Also don’t take more than 5% of anyone’s money.
