Google Android Project – Open Source, Free, Mobile Platform
Just found this project started by Google called Android. As mentioned in the title, it is a open source, free platform for mobile devices(mobile phones, pda, all other portable devices). According to google, “Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications.” and its SDK allows developers use JAVA to create applications for the platform, and it uses Linus as its kernel. (Read more in here) From the features mentioned in the website, this is very exciting. What is more, the package may also offer an Applle iPhone appstore-like application, which allows developers to sell their apps for android-based devices, and users to securely download/purcharsed the apps on to their devices.
I think this is pretty much signifying google is joining the competition in mobile market. By providing an free, open sourced operation system and development platform, as well as a secure market platform to distribute applications, google has great potential becomes something big in the mobile world.
And this project will also bring more possibilities for mobile content distribution, and finally, mobile world can/will become much more exciting. (That’s what I always hoped, after all, mobile devices are more personal, much closer to us and much easier to carry! look at my ipod touch!)
Check out the detail here. And below for the demo video from google.
